During a recent Lower School chapel session, Mrs. Tessie Hamilton, children’s director at the Chapel, spoke to us about honor. She shared the story from John 12:1-8, where Mary honored Jesus by anointing His feet with expensive perfume—showing Him love and respect.
Mrs. Hamilton reminded us that honor means showing high value to others with both what we do and in our attitude.
Why honor? Because Jesus honored His parents, and Romans 12:10 says to honor others above ourselves. God values every person—so we should too.
Who do we honor?
- Honor UP to God and those in authority; parents, teachers, pastors, and coaches.
- Honor DOWN to younger people or those we are helping.
- Honor ALL AROUND to our friends, classmates, and siblings.
We honor others by encouraging them, helping without complaining or arguing, and doing everything with a good attitude. The good news is that the Holy Spirit can help us honor others well, even when it’s hard to do.
