Upper School History, Govt., Speech & Bible

Rick McKeel hails from Durham, North Carolina—the Bull City and a place with more than its share of history. That makes it a fitting hometown for someone fascinated by the past and the ways people govern themselves. In 1994, Rick made his way to Virginia to work with a statewide trade association supporting travel and tourism. His career later led him into higher education, where he taught for two decades.

Rick first pursued history in college before shifting his studies to communication. The two disciplines now meet naturally in his work at Banner Christian School. Through history, government, speech communication, and Bible, he invites students to consider how societies function, how beliefs guide decisions, and how ideas can be communicated with clarity and purpose.

Following many years in secular higher education, Rick felt called to help students more intentionally integrate Christian principles into their education and decision-making. The shared commitment demonstrated by Banner Christian’s administrators and teachers drew him to the school. He values the opportunity to connect faith with learning and encourage students to consider how a biblical worldview informs their choices and participation in the wider community.

Faith and family remain at the center of Rick’s life beyond the classroom. He treasures time with his wife, family, and grandchildren and has participated in Community Bible Study for more than a decade. His curiosity also inspires him to explore new places whenever the opportunity arises. For Rick, each journey offers another chance to experience different people, communities, and chapters of history.
